Traveling abroad with your pet is a fantastic experience. Passport for Pets has certainly opened many doors for people with pets.We no longer have to put them in kennels for weeks on end and then worry if they are going to be OK, which then spoils our own holiday because we can not relax The buildup  for us  was totally nerve wrecking to start with.We had no idea where to start or what to do or even how to do it. Where do we find the informasions we requier? Thank goodness our Vet knew what had to be done to start off with, but that was related to UK only - the requirements are different for each country so that was something we had to find out our selves..Well we all have access to the internet and surprise ,surprise everything you need to know is there. First step of course is the Pass Port issued by your Vet, the Rabbis Vaccine and various blood tests - which is a requirements for every country in Europe-This first stage can take up to 6 months  so if you are planning to take you pet next summer START NOW..Boosters has to be up to date and recorded,Micro chipping or Tattoo must be noted in the Passport for pets.Worming and health documents - all depending on the countries you are visiting.I ended up buying a Micro chip scanner  because I was informed that other countries scanners are not neccessarily competitive with UKs micro chips. We had copies of all the dogs documents and  I also gave 1 copy to our Vet. Oh yes.I almost forgot- The Pet Pass Photograph.  Again we took a photo from both sides - full body - of the dog and both sides of their head .Well worth the extra effort. You must remember that at present there are only a few Ferry ports and Ferries in UK that you can Leave and Return  through with your pet so check with the ferry companies and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Norman and the dogs waiting for the ferry from Harwich to Hock-of- Holland .Next day we had to wait for the ferry from Germany to Denmark ..Lots of hanging around.

-Many countries insist that you have your pet treated for worms within 7 days of entering their country. This will then be noted in you Pets Passport. So again find out what the various requirements are for each country  you are going to visit with regards to worming, fleas, ticks ,vaccinations etc.

.Before returning to UK your pet has to be wormed , treated for fleas and ticks. 24 to max 48 hours before your return to UK.

It does not matter if your pet was treated BEFORE you left.. It has to be done again and SIGNED , DATED AND TIMED in you pets Pass Port.

It doesn’t matter if they haven’t got any fleas or ticks  It has to be done or they will not let you back into UK.If you travel to hot countries - Please make sure you treat your dogs for HEART WORM. Start BEFORE you leave UK and CONTINUE well after oyu get back to UK.Tell your Vet you want it.Having lived in hot countries with our dogs I have seen what heart worm does to your dog. Even if people say -oh don’t bother it will never happen.Well you might be the unlucky pet owner whose pet dies due to  the “ I Can’t be asked “ attitude “ It is also well worth finding out what risks there are for your pet while traveling abroad.Do not forget your Pet Insurance. Some pet insurance companies gives you an insurance cover for traveling abroad. So contact your current pet insurance and find out.

We traveled 8225 miles over a 2 months period through Scandinavia. We started in Wales ,went to Harwich over to Holland ,up through Holland ,Germany and into Denmark. We drew the length and almost the breath of Sweden close to the Baltic coast .We crossed the Arctic  Circle in Sweden just barely 10c . We then drew parallel to the Finish boarder and into Norway. We arrived in Norway to 4c . wet, windy and 24 hours daylight.  Had 5 days In Tromso.(North of Norway)Back down through Norway which had by now heated up to a good 28 c , again we crossed the Arctic circle but this time  in 23 c . we spent a total of 5 weeks in Norway. We drew back through Sweden into Denmark-where we stayed for 1 Week and then home to UK.The weather was superb. Very hot -30 to 33 c  So travelling in the car through Scandinavia with the dogs was at times rather uncomfertable.Thank goodness we have air conditioning. We stopped a lot along the way.Roughly every 2 to 3 hours.Lots of short walks for the dogs and us. As you know- sitting and lack of movements isn’t too good for you or the dogs.We gave them  lots to drink and where we had the chance, a good cooling dip in a lake or the sea

The only time that the dogs Passports  and vaccination certificaets were checked was at ALL the dog shows we had entered in Norway , Sweden and Denmark. We had a Very Thorough check at Hock of Holland going back to UK.You are required to go on RED- Something to declare, but at every Customs we went through  they just looked at us and said - What do you want- We answered  we are travelling with dogs- Reply-- Yes ? Well here are the Pet Passports ..No that won’t be neccessary - move along !! .. and that was it. Great. The dogs had a super time though the only down side was that Norway and Sweden has a law on dogs. Dogs must be on  lead at all times. This is to protect the live stock and wild life.It was difficult at times but we did get the odd chance to let them have a bit of freedom....
